Spiritual Breakthrough

What is a spiritual breakthrough? A spiritual breakthrough occurs when we as children of God are able to enact our spiritual will, through faith in the promises and Word of God, to produce a favorable, earthly outcome.

In the book of Exodus, Moses was a larger-than-life figure whom God taught, firsthand spiritual breakthrough 101. Years ago when I was younger I never understood the purpose of the Old Testament scriptures in a New Testament believer’s life. As I would read the Old Testament I just felt that the books were long and boring. Like in the book of Numbers which has some incredibly long lists in it, including two censuses?

I later found out that the Old Testament is the ultimate source of faith-building precedence. In the Old Testament, you will find some of the most unbelievable spiritual breakthroughs in history. The story of the Children Of Israel illustrates perfectly one of these breakthroughs. First, I would like to say in order for anyone to see a spiritual breakthrough you must have faith. Faith in God is non-negotiable. The familiar scripture in Hebrews 11:6 says without faith it’s impossible to please God.

HOW TO HAVE A SPIRITUAL BREAKTHROUGH

As you will see in this story it’s going to take massive amounts of faith for the Children Of Israel to go from being slaves in Egypt to eating milk and honey in the land of Canaan. Let’s backtrack a little so we can see how God would perform this breakthrough and release the people of God from their bondage in Egypt. At this time Pharaoh was known as and considered to be God on earth. He was the most powerful man on earth. Visually, for Moses the shepherd at the time to approach Pharaoh would look insane. In the natural man’s eye, he would be risking his life! Pharaoh was in a palace with guards and fine linen clothing, and Moses had been in the desert for forty years tending to sheep. Quite certainly Moses was unkempt and disheveled.

So you could just imagine the scene of this reluctant, old, disheveled man who had been on the backside of the desert for close to forty years approaching the pharaoh out of nowhere and saying, the God of Israel has said, let my people go. How could anything like this even be remotely possible? Under normal circumstances, Moses would have been dead within the hour. You have to understand that the pharaoh and his words were taken extremely seriously. No one trifled with the pharaoh. Beheadings, being impaled on enormous spikes, being emasculated, being dismembered and burned alive on a bed of thorns were just some of the ways that pharaoh would punish those who tested his authority. Moses had to overcome an incredible amount of fear to get to the point of standing in front of the pharaoh and making these types of demands.

Moses actually went to great lengths to get out of this assignment of the Lord. In Exodus 3:11 Moses said to God: Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt? In Exodus 4:1 Moses said to God: Behold, they will not believe me or listen to my voice, for they will say, ‘The LORD did not appear to you.’” In Exodus 4:10 Moses said to God: “Oh, my Lord, I am not eloquent, either in the past or since you have spoken to your servant, but I am slow of speech and of tongue.” In Exodus 4:13 Moses finally said to God: Oh, my Lord, please send someone else.

THE BREAKTHROUGH BEGINS IN YOUR MIND

Our ability to see the Power of God move in our lives will always be connected to our ability to rebuke fear and embrace faith in our minds. It is in the battlefield of the mind that we decide to either believe God or not. Peter could have never caught so many fish in Luke chapter 5, to the point where they broke his nets unless he had made up his mind to take God at His Word when He said, let down your nets.

The same was true for Moses and Arron, and although Moses started out very reluctant and fearful of the idea of approaching the pharaoh, he eventually overcame fear, embraced faith, and obeyed God.

Now, after all of the discussion with God, Moses goes back to his father-in-law, Jethro, and tells him that he needs to go back to Egypt. While this is happening the Lord speaks to Arron and instructs him to go into the wilderness to meet Moses.

Moses then meets Arron and conveys all that has happened and all that the Lord has instructed them to do. In chapter 4 verses 29-30, the Bible says:
Then Moses and Aaron went and gathered together all the elders of the people of Israel. Aaron spoke all the words that the LORD had spoken to Moses and did the signs in the sight of the people. And the people believed; and when they heard that the LORD had visited the people of Israel and that he had seen their affliction, they bowed their heads and worshiped.
In these two verses, you see what should be all of our responses when receiving instructions from the Lord. They believed they bowed and worshiped. Here you have faith and submission. Now beginning in Chapter 5 we see Moses and Arron going into pharaoh and saying that our God has said, let my people go. A very important thing to point out here is that whenever you seek to do something for God or believe God for something, it’s not at all uncommon for your situation to get worse before it gets better.
This happens to Moses and Arron here in verse 6: The same day Pharaoh commanded the taskmasters of the people and their foramen, “You shall no longer give the people straw to make bricks, as in the past; let them go and gather straw for themselves. But the number of bricks that they made in the past you shall impose on them, you shall by no means reduce it, for they are idle. Therefore they cry, ‘Let us go and offer sacrifice to our God.’ Let heavier work be laid on the men that they may labor at it and pay no regard to lying words.”
Unfortunately, those who weren’t firm in their faith in God’s promises were easily shaken by the pharaoh’s words. This is satan’s intent whenever we set out to believe God, but what we need to remember is that this is just a distraction. It’s never too late for God to fix our situation and He will never allow your trust in His word to be put to shame.
Now before any of the plagues begin, God gives the pharaoh one more chance to simply release Israel from its bondage.
And here’s the deal, a lot of people, when teaching or preaching about this story, focus on the ten plagues and what they were, but I want to focus on God’s supremacy over man and all that exists. It’s easy, with our modern lifestyles, to forget our need for God and unfortunately, many people have forgotten their need for Him and don’t see a need for God today.
Friends, no matter how hard man tries to eliminate God from their lives and society, we will always need Him. Without God, we simply make too many mistakes that we don’t have the knowledge or ability to fix. This is what has happened with the COVID-19 pandemic and all of the tragic weather occurrences. Unfortunately, God is not pleased with our country and its direction.
This story illustrates, perfectly, God’s occasional intervention into the affairs of man, which reminds us of His supremacy, our dependence on Him, and His might and power. He’s not pleased with the way we are living and just like in the time of pharaoh God is saying I’m still in control. I still have the ultimate say. This story also illustrates that there is no power on earth or anywhere else that can stand against God or His will.
It doesn’t matter how great and powerful we think we are in man’s eyes, no power on earth can stand against the power of God. So let’s wrap this up, what have we learned about spiritual breakthroughs? 1. Spiritual breakthroughs come when we choose to believe God over our fear and our problems. 2. Spiritual breakthroughs come when we obey God, through our fear, in the midst of our problems.
The two are the same really because obeying the Word Of God, especially since none of us have seen Him, is in itself an act of belief, aka faith. When we obey the Bible we are saying to God I believe you exist and that this is Your Word. This is not limited to spiritual breakthroughs, but rather this is the formula for everything we need and will ever need from God. In Matt.19:26 Jesus said with God all things are possible.
Amen, well I thank God for an incredible study today and pray that many of you were edified by it. Thank you so much for studying with us and being here, we love you and we are praying with you that the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be extended to you. Until next time we pray that your faith fail not.
