What is a spiritual breakthrough? A spiritual breakthrough occurs when we as children of God are able to enact our spiritual will, through faith in the promises and Word of God, to produce a favorable, earthly outcome.
In the book of Exodus, Moses was a larger-than-life figure whom God taught, firsthand spiritual breakthrough 101. Years ago when I was younger I never understood the purpose of the Old Testament scriptures in a New Testament believer’s life. As I would read the Old Testament I just felt that the books were long and boring. Like in the book of Numbers which has some incredibly long lists in it, including two censuses?
I later found out that the Old Testament is the ultimate source of faith-building precedence. In the Old Testament, you will find some of the most unbelievable spiritual breakthroughs in history. The story of the Children Of Israel illustrates perfectly one of these breakthroughs. First, I would like to say in order for anyone to see a spiritual breakthrough you must have faith. Faith in God is non-negotiable. The familiar scripture in Hebrews 11:6 says without faith it’s impossible to please God.
HOW TO HAVE A SPIRITUAL BREAKTHROUGH
As you will see in this story it’s going to take massive amounts of faith for the Children Of Israel to go from being slaves in Egypt to eating milk and honey in the land of Canaan. Let’s backtrack a little so we can see how God would perform this breakthrough and release the people of God from their bondage in Egypt. At this time Pharaoh was known as and considered to be God on earth. He was the most powerful man on earth. Visually, for Moses the shepherd at the time to approach Pharaoh would look insane. In the natural man’s eye, he would be risking his life! Pharaoh was in a palace with guards and fine linen clothing, and Moses had been in the desert for forty years tending to sheep. Quite certainly Moses was unkempt and disheveled.
So you could just imagine the scene of this reluctant, old, disheveled man who had been on the backside of the desert for close to forty years approaching the pharaoh out of nowhere and saying, the God of Israel has said, let my people go. How could anything like this even be remotely possible? Under normal circumstances, Moses would have been dead within the hour. You have to understand that the pharaoh and his words were taken extremely seriously. No one trifled with the pharaoh. Beheadings, being impaled on enormous spikes, being emasculated, being dismembered and burned alive on a bed of thorns were just some of the ways that pharaoh would punish those who tested his authority. Moses had to overcome an incredible amount of fear to get to the point of standing in front of the pharaoh and making these types of demands.
Moses actually went to great lengths to get out of this assignment of the Lord. In Exodus 3:11 Moses said to God: Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt? In Exodus 4:1 Moses said to God: Behold, they will not believe me or listen to my voice, for they will say, ‘The LORD did not appear to you.’” In Exodus 4:10 Moses said to God: “Oh, my Lord, I am not eloquent, either in the past or since you have spoken to your servant, but I am slow of speech and of tongue.” In Exodus 4:13 Moses finally said to God: Oh, my Lord, please send someone else.
THE BREAKTHROUGH BEGINS IN YOUR MIND
Our ability to see the Power of God move in our lives will always be connected to our ability to rebuke fear and embrace faith in our minds. It is in the battlefield of the mind that we decide to either believe God or not. Peter could have never caught so many fish in Luke chapter 5, to the point where they broke his nets unless he had made up his mind to take God at His Word when He said, let down your nets.
The same was true for Moses and Arron, and although Moses started out very reluctant and fearful of the idea of approaching the pharaoh, he eventually overcame fear, embraced faith, and obeyed God.
