What Is The Power Of God?

It’s so interesting to observe the world as it is now and the generation that lives in it. Generations of people are rapidly moving further and further from God and His Word. At the same time, there is a remnant of people curious about God who will ask questions like, what is the Power of God?

The Power Of God referred to in the Bible is God’s impartation of the Holy Spirit upon man. The Holy Spirit of God allows man to do what he alone could never do. The Holy Spirit of God empowers man to do the impossible and carry out the will of God on the earth.

The Power Of God Is a wonderful and needful thing to study. As we continue we want to dive deep into this subject and allow the Spirit Of God to bless us with His wisdom, lets’s get started…

What Is God’s Power Called In The Bible?

I thought this was an unusual question when I first saw it but as I began to look into it and do some digging into the Word Of God I realized that the question is quite legit. We shouldn’t assume everyone knows the answers. In Acts 1:8 we find the very familiar verse which says, “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth”. In this verse I want to zero in on the word “Power”. In the original Greek text the word for power is dunamis.

Dunamis is where we get the two English words dynamic and dynamite, both of which are easily associated with “power”. Furthermore, dunamis can also be translated “mighty works” and “wonderful works.” The implication is not just the capacity for activity or accomplishment, but actual actions and achievements of such magnitude that they inspire a sense of wonder in others. Similarly, dunamis is also translated “miracles” a few times.

Jesus tells His disciples in Acts 1:8 that they would have dynamic power to accomplish the will of God on the earth. Although we get our English word dynamite from the Greek word dunamis, and dynamite is indeed certainly powerful, God’s Power is infinitely more powerful than dynamite will ever be. In the very next chapter, Acts 2:16 Peter said, speaking of God’s Spirit and Power, “But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel, And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit/Power upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams”.

I want to over emphasIse that when the disciples were in the upper room waiting for the Spirit/Power of God to fall this was not a quiet event. A sound from heaven as a rushing mighty wind wouldn’t be a small event. When the Spirit of God comes It comes with power! God’s Power is called the Holy Spirit! He is God’s demonstrated Power given to us for good works.

How Does The Holy Spirit Give Us Power?

One of the themes that you will notice in reading the word of God and studying the last words of Jesus after He rose from the dead before He ascended to the Father in Heaven, is that He repeatedly instructed the disciple to go to Jerusalem and wait for the promise of His Father. This repeated urging is a clue of how important it is to have the Spirit of God within us, but it also begs the question, how does this promise, the Holy Spirit give us power?

The Holy Spirit itself is the Power that indwells our very being and empowers us to not only overcome the sin and personal struggles in our own lives but also to preach repentance and remission of sins in His name among all nations to the saving of souls.

In Luke 24:49 Jesus told His disciples this, “And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high”.

Friends the Power Of God as it relates to us is His Spirit. If you want God’s Power, you need God’s Spirit! It doesn’t matter how well we speak or sing. It doesn’t matter how good we look, who likes us, or how much money we have, without His Spirit we have nothing.

In I Corinthians 2:4 Paul argues, “And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God”. We must demonstrate the Power Of God, which is in essence, demonstrating that God’s Spirit dwells in you

How To Demonstrate The Power Of God?

After understanding all of the above and taking in what God is saying we have to go out and do it. Lots of Christians go to church every week and hear what God is saying, but the question becomes, how can I go out into the world and demonstrate the Power Of God effectively?

God’s Power is demonstrated when we believe His Word, obey His Word and work to advance His Agenda in the world. God’s Power has also been demonstrated when the fruits of the Spirit, as outlined in Galatians 5:22, are present in an individual’s life.

So to be able to demonstrate God’s Power calls for us to be equipped with a few different things. Until we become equipped, we can forget about any demonstration of His Power. The first thing we need to be equipped with is salvation, without the blood of Jesus, The Lord covering our sins God won’t even hear us. In Psalms 66:18 the Bible says, “If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me”. We must first be reconciled to God through faith in the death, burial, and resurrection of The Lord Jesus Christ.

The second thing that we will need to be able to demonstrate God’s Power in our lives is faith. As I’ve quoted in another post Hebrews 11:6 tells us, “But without faith, it is impossible to please Him: for he that cometh to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him”. Actually, faith activates the Power of God, It brings God’s Power to life in you. This is why Jesus says in Mark 11:24, “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours”.

The last thing I’ll mention one would need to demonstrate the Power Of God is an attitude of humility and servitude. Once we come into God’s Kingdom He expects us to serve. God expects us to serve Him and in so doing, serve others. We know this because in Matthew 9:37 Jesus says, “Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest”.

We also know this because we can turn on the news any time of the day and see the need for God in this world. Friends, in closing I want to just say we must be the light in this dark world of hatred. Without God and the people of God, this world is no different than the days of Noah. Jesus actually said in Matthew 24:37-39, “For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man”.
