Do We Need The Power Of God? What Does The Bible Say?

In this world, there are many forms, levels, and uses of power. It can be a complex word with multiple meanings and applications. There’s a big difference between the word power and the phrase, power of God, both in significance and meaning. Today we’ll focus on the power of God, what it is, and answer the question, do we need the power of God.

Without question, the whole of humanity is in constant need of the Power Of God for the sustaining of life and the earth. The Power Of God is also essential for humanity to be reconciled to God through faith in the finished work of Jesus, the Christ, and Him crucified.

For this study, I’ll be focusing on man’s spiritual need for God’s Power for the purposes of salvation, sanctification, healing, and Kingdom building, lets’s get started…

Why We Need The Power Of God For Salvation

In the sixth chapter of St. John verses 28-44, an interesting conversation began to take place between Jesus and some in the crowd that had been listening to Him speak. After listening to Jesus for a while some from the crowd began to ask Jesus how they could do the works of God. Jesus responds by saying, believe in Him whom the Father hath sent to you. In other words, you can start by believing in me and what I’m teaching you. They responded, what sign do you show us that we may believe? They continued, that the scriptures say that our fathers ate bread from heaven in the desert.

They wanted a sign before they would believe in Jesus and the things He said. Jesus then responded that I am the bread of life that came down from heaven and he that comes to me will never hunger or thirst. The Jews began to complain because Jesus said that He was the bread of life that came down from heaven, which in their eyes was an incredibly blasphemest thing to say. Jesus responds and tells them to basically calm down because no one can come to me of their own accord anyway. In the 44th verse, Jesus says, “No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day”.

I say all of that to say we need the power of God for salvation because it’s only the power of God that can draw us out of sin. Whenever someone gets saved and converted to Christ it’s by the power of God. We don’t just wake up and decide to be saved and I wanted to tell that story because these people had God, the creator of the universe right in front of them but their eyes were blind. In St. John’s 3rd chapter verse 3 reads, “Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God”.

We can’t even see the Kingdom Of God unless we’re born again, and we can’t be born again unless the Power Of God draws us. Our salvation and spiritual existence depend on the mercy, grace, and Power Of God.

Why We Need The Power Of God For Sanctification

A couple of definitions for sanctification are, the action of making or declaring something holy, the action or process of being freed from sin or purified, and the action of causing something to be or seem morally right or acceptable. In Christianity, sanctification is an essential doctrine to man’s reconciliation with God. Just as with salvation sanctification doesn’t just happen on its own or by man’s will. Following the fall of Adam and Eve In the Garden of Eden sin became part of man’s nature.

In Ephesians 2:3 Paul writes, “Among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind”. Anyone who’s ever tried to live a perfectly sinless life knows that it’s an impossible feat, to say the least. So what’s the solution if it’s impossible? How can anyone be sanctified, justified, and ultimately saved? The Bible teaches that Jesus came to earth to die for the sins of the world. Prior to Jesus’s coming in order to be forgiven and cleared of sin God allowed his righteous judgment to be appeased by the sacrificing of animals.

That method wasn’t very sustainable which brings us back to Jesus and Him crucified. Jesus endure the righteous judgment of God so we wouldn’t have to and when we place our faith in Him we instantly become sanctified, Justified, and restored to God. Without the Power of God, none of this would be possible at all because again It’s God that allows us to come to Him and believe.

Why We Need God’s Power For Healing

Our God is all powerful. The Bible teaches that nothing is impossible to a person who believes in the Word Of God. With all of the sickness, pain, and disease in our world, we need God’s power more than ever. Many people don’t believe in the power, or word of God, but those of us who do understand that God’s power is activated by faith. Healing encompasses more than just physical illness. There are some things that can torment a person from the inside out. Anxiety is a great example of this, it’s just something that takes the power of God to get past.

These are the times that we have to remember verses like IITimothy 1:7 which says, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind”. Now don’t misunderstand me, doctors are great and do a great service to the world. Doctors are and always will be needed for a multitude of reasons but they will never replace the power of God. There’s simply no substitute for a right relationship with God and His Power.

Why We Need God’s Power For Kingdom Building

In Acts 1:8 the Bible says, “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth”.

Once a person is born into the Kingdom of God they have entered into a spiritual war. There’s a war going on right now even as I speak between good and evil, light and darkness. In order to fight this war, we will need the power of God spoken of in the above verse. The word power in the original Greek text of Acts 1:8 is dunamis. Dunamis is used over 100 times in the New Testament. Loosely, the word refers to “strength, power, or ability.” It is the root word of our English words dynamitedynamo, and dynamic. It is this same power that will allow us to build the Kingdom of God and fight off the attacks of the devil.

Paul brings this point out very well in Ephesians 6:10-12 where he states, “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places”. Without the Power Of God, we are no match for the devil.
